Hat intézmény (a Budapesti Gazdasági Egyetem, a Budapesti Metropolitan Egyetem, a Dunaújvárosi Egyetem, az Eszterházy Károly Főiskola, a Kecskeméti Főiskola és a Nyíregyházi Egyetem) január, illetőleg július 1-vel alkalmazott tudományok egyeteme besorolással egyetemként működik tovább.

 
A magyar felsőfokú oktatás történetében eleddig nem ismert intézménytípus első képviselői számára a Nyíregyházi Egyetem szimpóziumot szervezett. A szakmai diskurzus megindítását szolgáló kezdeményezés célja, hogy a nemzeti felsőoktatásban az ’alkalmazott tudományok egyeteme’ megfelelően definiálódjék, beágyazódjék, kétségtelen létjogosultságot, elismerést és jól kommunikálható funkciót nyerjen mind a szakmai közösségek, mind a szélesebb társadalom képviselői előtt.
 
2016. április 14-én a Nyíregyházi Egyetemen találkoztak elsőként az alkalmazott tudományok egyetemeinek vezetői, ahol az új szervezettípus működéséből adódó sajátosságokat, a jövő terveit, a tudományos és szakmai együttműködés lehetséges pontjait keresték. A szimpózium fő témái: az egyetemek új szerepe, identitása, képzési és kutatási feladatai, az átsorolás gyakorlati tapasztalatai és a továbblépés lehetőségei voltak. A résztvevők megismerkedtek egymás munkájával, tapasztalatot cseréltek, illetve megállapodtak abban, hogy a munka folytatásaként az egyeztetéseket a jövőben rendszeressé teszik.
 
A megbeszélésen részt vett Dr. Ailer Piroska, a Kecskeméti Főiskola rektora, Dr. Ollé János, az Eszterházy Károly Főiskola rektorhelyettese, Sándorné dr. Kriszt Éva, a Budapesti Gazdasági Egyetem rektora, Dr. Vass László, a Budapesti Metropolitan Egyetem rektora és Dr. Onder Csaba, a Nyíregyházi Egyetem rektora, illetve a házigazda intézmény rektorhelyettesei (Dr. Kerülő Judit és Dr. Kiss Ferenc). Dr. András István, a Dunaújvárosi Egyetem rektora későbbi időpontban csatlakozik az együttműködők munkájához.
